Cassini’s
Division got together in the summer of 2001 to make their own brand
of punk-influenced alternative
music. We are an everyday sort of band. We believe in making intelligent music that appeals both at a lyrical and musical level. There is a kind of sadness in our sound and lyrics. However, it does hold out a place for hope and redemption as well. Most of the time Rahul writes the lyrics and the song skeleton, and the band sits and fleshes out the music trying to bring the tune to life. The bands focus is on writing catchy but intelligent post-punk nuggets with lyrics that range from the seriously socio-political to witty, often cynical takes on issues that crop up in everybody’s daily life. Ironically, we must be one of the few bands in the country that is known mainly for its originals. Caesar, Only for a While, Higher Voivoid and Stay are the most widely requested songs at shows and all of them are originals. As for the market – it is hard to say. Our music is song-based and we do attempt to be melodic in a catchy sort of a way. I think we have the potential to break into the mainstream. Post punk groups like The Cure, Joy Division, and Morissey, and the first wave of alternative music like REM, Radiohead, Nirvana, etc. are the wellsprings from which we drank the nectar initially. We are also interested in hip-hop and R&B. We also love a lot of modern bands playing today. At shows we cover Radiohead, Nirvana, REM, Creed, Lifehouse, Dashboard Confessional, Blink 182, Alien Ant Farm, Green Day, System of a Down and 3 Doors Down. Cassini’s Division continues to record and perform while shopping
for an album deal. It plays the prestigious weekend slot at Someplace
Else (The Park – Calcutta), considered to be the Mecca of live
music in India, and continues to explore avenues to take the music to
as many people as possible out there.
